Academic advising is an ongoing collaborative educational process of shared responsibility between student and advisor—a partnership. This partnership requires the participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student.

Advising Responsibilities

Advisors

• Assist you in developing and achieving realistic academic goals based on your interests, abilities, and needs.
• Encourage you to develop decision-making skills and assume responsibility for your actions and plans.
• Encourage you to review your progress toward major declaration to assure early detection of problems.
• Provide you with information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
• Effectively communicate University policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Refer you to available campus resources to meet your individual needs.
• Provide a respectful, supportive atmosphere and maintain confidentiality.

Students

• Initiate and maintain contact with their academic advisor and check their Webmail on a regular basis.
• Keep scheduled appointments and bring a list of questions or areas of interest to discuss
• Discuss factors that affect academic performance
• Follow through on advisor recommendations
• Learn academic requirements, policies, procedures, and requirements
• Explore different majors and the career options that accompany them. Reflect on their interests and values to pick a discipline or field of study that is a good fit for them.
• Utilize campus resources to facilitate academic and personal success.
• Accept responsibility for decisions.
